Management of spent High-Level radioactive sources in Ukraine

Many spent or unused radioactive sources are stored in Ukraine on five regional sites of RADON, a state-run corporation. Storage conditions there do not meet today's safety and security requirements. Eventually, these sources will have to be recovered and reconditioned for transportation to a safer, long-term storage facility (VECTOR II) that offers every guarantee of protection. The facility will be built in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, largely on British funding.

Initiated in 2009, French funding will facilitate the implementation of modern conditioning facilities for radioactive sources recovered from RADON sites, and the improvement of radioactive source transport security.

Design studies have been initiated for the construction of the following :

  • shielded mobile system for teh extraction and recovery of radioactive sources currently contained in obsolete irradiation units,
  • type B transport containers to transfer these radioactive sources to future storage facilities.
